What is a Transport Wheelchair?

Transport Wheelchairs are different from regular manual wheelchairs in that they are not designed to be pushed by the person seated in the chair. Rather, they are intended to be pushed by a caregiver, friend or family member of the person seated in the chair.

Transport wheelchairs come in a variety of colors and sizes, and lately even styles. In particular, one manufacturer named Drive Medical has released a product called the “Duet”, which is a transport chair and rollator combined into one item. It has handles that flip down on one side, as well as a reversible backrest and fold-away footrests which enable the user or caregiver to completely convert the device from a full-featured rollator to a full-featured transport wheelchair in as little as 30 seconds. You can read more about the Duet Transport Wheelchair and Rollator at the Transport Wheelchairs Blog.

Back to traditional transport wheelchair, they are often referred to only as transport chairs, and sometimes as travel wheelchairs. Any of these three terms refers to the same basic mobility device.

Guide for Buying Medical Equipment Online:

BuyMedicalEquipment.net is dedicated to helping retail consumers make better purchase decisions when buying medical equipment online.

Not every company selling medical equipment is the same. Not every brand is the same, nor is every product the same — including those that look extremely similar and have similar-sounding names.

The mission and purpose of this website is to help consumers sift through the myriad of online sellers of medical equipment and related products, in hopes of finding the best company, price and overall bargain from the standpoint of the buyer.

For example, when it comes to the world of online HME/DME sales (Home, and Durable Medical Equipment, respectively), many online retailers actively manipulate third-party shopping feeds – and thus customers – by offering what on the surface appears to be a competitive price, but then add-in outrageous shipping and handling charges such that once the additional charges are added-in, the seller’s price is equal-to or greater-than that of a majority of other sellers of the same or similar products.

Furthermore, there are a whole host of personal mobility items for which very different products may appear similar or even identical in product photos. From a functionality standpoint, they may well be identical, and the same goes for appearance. The difference often lies with the quality of the respective product.

Many vendors offer low-quality, made-in-China products that appear to be identical to comparable models produced by trusted manufacturers, but are anything but. These low-quality mobility items can in fact be very dangerous when made by a fly-by-night manufacturer with little-to-no experience producing products for this specific industry.

Well-established vendors with brands that have built a reputation over time usually offer some type of warranty for any time of mobility, accessibility, assistive technology and other products for which the primary purpose is to improve or enhance personal safety, including but not limited to those items which seek to accomplish this while simultaneously providing the user with an enhanced degree of personal mobility or accessibility compared to the person’s circumstances without the device.

For mobility and bathroom safety items, quality manufacturers typically offer a limited lifetime warranty, backing up their claim of quality with a promise and a guarantee. These warranties are typically voided by user misuse or abuse of the item, but the same can be said of any lifetime warranty or any warranty in general. Unfortunately, there are people out there who will deliberately misuse or abuse products solely for the purpose of attempting to regain their purchase cost once they no longer need the item, or as a means of filing a frivolous lawsuit against the manufacturer and/or the company that sold the item.

That said, from a business standpoint, companies that sell mobility products that are not backed by legit warranties are at greater risk of a legitimate personal injury claim, as they will not be able to stand by the quality of the device sold and pursue a strategy of proving user abuse or misuse, and in most cases are well-aware that they are selling dangerous, low-quality products.

These are just a few examples of the reason for this website’s existence. Our mission is to help provide useful information to consumers so as to enable them to make informed purchase decisions the first-time, sparing them the time, money and potential pain associated with being lured-in by tricks and gimmicks.
